Turn it and Turn it
Drisha has often run classes organized around a shared theme or topic. Each season of Turn It & Turn It comprises all the lectures on a given theme, bringing you multiple complementary takes on an issue. This podcast spans two decades, putting some of our earliest audio recordings shoulder to shoulder with more recent and contemporary lectures - all exemplifying the principle that Torah demands persistent, multi-angled study. Pirkei Avot is probably the most well-known tractate of Mishnah. Its style and content are unique. Unlike other Mishnayot which focus on detailed halachot (Jewish laws), Pirkei Avot is a collection of rabbinic teachings and sayings on how to lead a proper life. We will give an overview of the chapters focusing on personality traits associated with the good, the bad and the in-between. The third and fifth chapters especially include some surprising characteristics with unexpected consequences. We will pay close attention to the authors of these sayings and to understanding a broader context for the various opinions.

In this course we will discuss these diverse conceptions of Biblical meaning. In addition, we will explore the pivotal role that these early disputes played in the evolution of modern interpretive approaches to the biblical text.
