Turn it and Turn it
Drisha has often run classes organized around a shared theme or topic. Each season of Turn It & Turn It comprises all the lectures on a given theme, bringing you multiple complementary takes on an issue. This podcast spans two decades, putting some of our earliest audio recordings shoulder to shoulder with more recent and contemporary lectures - all exemplifying the principle that Torah demands persistent, multi-angled study. Turn it and turn it: there’s a lot to discuss!

This season of Turn it & Turn it is on the topic of: "Divinity & Humanity"
This lecture compares Martin Buber's emphasis on mutuality in dialogue with Franz Rosenzweig, and Emmanuel Levinas’ philosophies of dialogue. While Rosenzweig and Levinas share much in common with Buber, they stress the fundamentally asymmetrical nature of our relation to others (we owe others something but they don’t owe us anything) and to God (God commands us; we don’t command God). We will explore the implications of these three philosophers’ ideas for interreligious dialogue as well as their use of gendered language to make their claims.Texts: I and Thou, Star of Redemption, Nine Talmudic Readings, Exodus, Song of Songs

Plague is one of God’s preferred forms of collective punishment in the Bible. Just as plagues often start in reaction to human misdeeds, they can often be stopped by human action as well. What stops a plague? How can individual actions, even extreme ones, change the balance of the public’s guilt in God’s eyes? To answer these questions, we will examine depictions of plague and how it can end through the lens of rabbinic texts, including the story of Rabbi Akiva’s students and the abrupt cessation of their plague-related deaths.
